Brennecke’s Beach, Kauai: Best 2024 Visitor Guide

Brennecke’s Beach? Bet you missed this tiny beach on the far eastern edge of Poipu Beach Park, so small, it’s easy to ignore.

Brennecke’s Beach, though tiny, is one of the best Kauai beaches for boogie boarding, body boarding and body surfing!

The waves that come crashing through to this small beach are not long, but they sure are powerful, and offer thrilling rides for advanced boogie boarders and body surfers!

And if you are a good swimmer, the shallow waters here in winter are quite calm and a lot less crowded than the popular Poipu Beach for some snorkeling and swimming.

Visiting Kauai? The only way to get a real feel for the rugged beauty of this incredible island is through a helicopter tour!

Best Things to Do at Brennecke’s Beach

1. Boogie Board or Body Surf at Brennecke’s Beach

Adventure tourist seeking some thrills? Check out the barrel-shaped and powerful, but short, waves at Brennecke’s Beach!

A mecca for advanced boogie boarders (surfing is not allowed here) and body surfers, Brennecke’s Beach offers the most thrills on the South Shore of Kauai, especially in summer, when the waves swell with the winds.

Almost perfectly shaped like tunnels or barrels, these waves are a dream come true for the boogie boarders that ride them!

2. Brennecke’s Beach Swimming & Snorkeling

Swimming and snorkeling are too dangerous at Brennecke’s Beach in summer.

Oddly enough, in winter, unlike Kauai’s north shore beaches, the south shore beaches like Brennecke’s Beach tend to become quite calm, almost lake-like, especially during the mornings.

And that’s the best time to go snorkeling at Brennecke’s Beach!

We’ve seen beautiful Hawaiian reef fish while snorkeling here including yellow tangs, convict tangs, triggerfish, butterflyfish and even Hawaiian green sea turtles.

To identify these beautiful fish consult our detailed Hawaii Fish Snorkeling Guide.

3. Stay Back for Sunsets at Brennecke’s Beach

One of the best spots on Kauai to view sunsets, Brennecke’s Beach offers some of the most spectacular treats in the evenings!

You’ll see the orange orb slide gracefully into the warm Pacific Ocean waters, often accompanied by remarkable warm red, orange, and purple colors in the sky!

4. Eat at Brennecke’s Beach Broiler Restaurant

And if all the boogie boarding has built up an appetite, be sure to stop at Brennecke’s Beach Broiler Restaurant, one of the most popular restaurants in Poipu, and just across Hoone Street from Brennecke’s Beach.

Not only is the food delicious, you sure can’t beat the ambiance of an oceanfront restaurant!

Snorkeling and Water Activities Gear Checklist

Though you can rent snorkeling gear or use the ones that come with tours, we invested in our own gear, mainly due to Covid-19 (why take the risk?).

Ocean Safety Tips

Hawaii’s beaches are beautiful, but ocean activities can be dangerous. Ocean conditions are dynamic and can change without warning.

Here are some tips to enjoy the ocean and beaches safely:

  • ALWAYS heed posted warning signs.
  • Check conditions just before you arrive at your chosen beach, and watch conditions at the beach for a bit before you decide to enter the water.
  • Swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask the lifeguard for advice before you enter the water.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean, whether you are standing at the shore or on a cliff above. If you see wet rocks or sand, it means the water has been here recently.
  • Know your limitations, especially if you are not an experienced swimmer. If in doubt, do not go out.
  • If you choose to enter the water, go with a partner or in a group.
  • Know that alcohol can impair judgment and motor skills in the water.
  • Keep children close and always keep your eyes on what they are doing in the water.
  • Watch for sharp coral or rocks or sea urchins.
  • Check advisories regarding water quality at various beaches here.
